物語そのものも面白いけれど、1920年代にこんな小説を書いている国枝史郎本人のどうかしている様子にも気を取られてしまう作品だ。物語の主人公が気を失い、彼一人を乗せた丸木船が漂流していくのはともかく、その漂流する情景の描写だけが10ページ以上も続いたりするので、作者はきちんと物語に戻って来てくれるのだろうかと不安になる。漂流しているのは気絶したままの主人公なのか国枝史郎なのか、ことによると読んでいる自分も巻き添えを食っていやしないか。作者の没後30年近くも経って作品を「発見」した者たちが騒ぎ出すのも仕方のないことだ。
